Dog Training Seminar

Saturday January 21st, 2012, 1-6pm

At 5 Star’s training centre, #16, 3435 Westsyde Road. We are located beside the Home Hardware in the Westsyde Shopping Centre.

In this seminar, we will discuss the ins and outs of various training methods. We will demonstrate how to train without corrections and how to build a solid positive relationship with your pet.

There will be 8 working dog spots which will be awarded on a 1st come/1st served basis. The dogs will work through the following exercises:

  • Loose leash walking (not pulling you down the street!)
  • Polite greeting when approaching people

Working spots: Because this is a training seminar (not behaviour modification), for this workshop the working dogs must be people and dog friendly and because there will be a combination of training sessions and information lectures, the dogs must be able to lay quietly beside your chair, or stay in a crate or in your car between working sessions.

Auditing spots: unlimited ‐ you will learn A LOT by observing the working groups. Bring lots of paper to take notes!

You will have the opportunity to ask questions about training, management or behaviour issues happening at home at the end of the session.

Dr. Sophia Yin

March 31st & April 1st, 2012

In conjunction with the 2012 Animal Health Technology annual conference, 5 Star Dog Training is hosting a 2 day seminar by Dr. Sophia Yin.

We already have tremendous interest from trainers and veterinarians from all over B.C. and it promises to be very well received by the public as well.

Some of you probably know about Dr. Yin, but here's her bio. Her website is drsophiayin.com.

Dr. Sophia Yin knows what it's like to have a problem pet and nowhere to turn for professional help. And she has witnessed countless fractured relationships between misunderstood pets and their frustrated human's companions.

As a result, her mission in life is to improve our understanding of animals and their behaviour so that we can care for, appreciate and enjoy our time with them better.

Ever since she was a child, Sophia wanted to be a veterinarian, and in 1993, her dream came true. But once out in private practice, she quickly realized that more pets were euthanized due to behaviour problems than medical ones. She went back to school to study animal behaviour, and earned her Master's in Animal Science in 2001 from UC Davis where she studied vocal communication in dogs and worked on behaviour modification in horses, giraffes, ostriches, and chickens. During this time she was also the award-winning pet columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle. Upon receiving her degree focused on animal behaviour, Dr. Yin served for five years as a lecturer in the UC Davis Animal Science Department. Through these and an eclectic collection of other animal behaviour experiences, she came to realize the true secret to successful behavior modification.

Sophia learned that every pet needs a human who can lead. Not like a boss, but like a partner in a dance; someone who gives clear signals, rewards desirable behaviour as it occurs, removes rewards for inappropriate behaviour immediately, and sticks to the plan consistently until the new, good behaviour is a habit.

She found that because pets don't understand spoken language, they rely on body language plus desired or undesired consequences in order to learn. This means that humans must be aware of their movement and actions because every move they make while interacting with the pet influences the animal's behaviour and perception of them.

Sophia's dedication to helping people communicate with pets in a positive, scientifically sound way has led her to create a variety of exceptional books and products for pet owners and pet-care professionals who also aspire to bond with their pets on a whole new level. Dr. Sophia Yin currently sees behaviour house calls, works at San Francisco Veterinary Specialists (www.SFVS.net), writes for several veterinary and popular magazines and has consulted for several zoos. She also lectures and teaches workshops internationally on animal behaviour and low stress handling and has served as a behaviour expert for shows such as Dogs 101 on Animal Planet. She is also on the executive board for the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behaviour, the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) Handling Guidelines Committee, and the American Humane Association (AHA) Animal Behaviour and Training Advisory Committee.
